I’m all for progressive enhancement of form controls to offer functionality that isn’t available or poorly implemented, a classic example which springs to mind is multiple select which is very unintuitive to the user, enhancing this form control makes sense. However adding “gloss” to a form control that replaces it (often in an inferior manner) is not something I can advocate.

Pretty strong arguments against custom form-controls, Interested to know if you think there are any pros at all?

I think there’s plenty of room for improvement for browser form controls using CSS and JS, especially for some of the new HTML5 input types which are still quite rough around the edges, although shadow DOM should make a big impact here if/when it gains traction.

I’ve been wracking my brain and searching for this solution as well. Works great! I’m a very light programmer — I had found the patch, but didn’t understand all the syntax or how to actually pull out the URL in my theme.

Can’t imagine how many other people are struggling with this. Thanks for a straight forward explanation and fix.

Ah brilliant Al, that’s a lot cleaner than adding the extra bits to every input() call. I was having difficulty interpreting what the Cake documentation says about FormHelper defaults. The docs are not quite as clear as CodeIgniter’s.

You’ve pretty much gotten the right approach there. Fortunately you don’t actually need to do a great deal to get the FormHelper to work. You can set some defaults on the $this->Form->create(‘Model’, array()); which applies to all the standard automagic fields used afterwards. I used the following array as the defaults:

array(
‘div’ => array(‘class’ => ‘clearfix’),
‘between’ => ‘

’,
‘after’ => ‘

’,
‘class’ => ‘xxlarge’,
‘format’ => array(‘before’, ‘label’, ‘between’, ‘input’, ‘after’, ‘error’)
);

This did 90% of the work. Anything else was on a case-by-case basis.
