I'm all for progressive enhancement of form controls to offer functionality that isn't available or poorly implemented, a classic example which springs to mind is multiple select which is very unintuitive to the user, enhancing this form control makes sense.
Pretty strong arguments against custom form-controls, Interested to know if you think there are any pros at all?

I think there's plenty of room for improvement for browser form controls using CSS and JS, especially for some of the new HTML5 input types which are still quite rough around the edges, although shadow DOM should make a big impact here if/when it gains traction.
